SnowBuni Space Suit armor

...have you ever had this image in your head, and you just couldn't get your fingers to cooperate long enough to slap it onto paper?  Probably not, unless you happen to be a frustrated cartoonist.

Lately I've had an idea for a new type of spacesuit specifically designed for the animal hybrid people, the Sylvalagi.  I'm able to list the components of this science fiction outfit, but my sketches have (so far) failed to achieve my mental image of same.

I described my problem to cartoonist Shane Campos, and he was able to provide some help.

...

Basically we're looking for a retro-futuristic utopian look 'n feel to the suit, with a touch of dystopian Road Warrior-style improvised armor padding.  What say you?

Thanks for the assist, Shane.
Cool

I received an email from Jason Waltrip, and he says, "Saw you're looking for a new spacesuit for SnowBuni.  Here's my contribution to the design hunt."

Excellent job on the retro-50's motif... that extra-tall helmet is elegant.  It almost looks like a science-fiction design by European cartoonist Moebius.

Awesome! I like Jasons version better. I like how the tall helmet accommodates her ears.

I shared one of my sketches with cartoonist Waltrip, and explained that I had been trying to develop a SnowBuni spacesuit in the style similar to the Loonatics or the Sonic the Hedghog franchises, sort of an angular chibi look.

Jason responded with the following design.  He says, "Here's what I've done in the way of chibi Loonatic SnowBuni spacesuit.  I think it came out rather well."

I agree; she looks very cute in a serious I'm-gonna-kick-thine-tucas sort of way.

I'm really digging this thread. And the designs certainly capture the spirit of retro spacesuits where style trumped functionality. Sadly I can't find any examples but I have memories of at least one image where a woman's spacesuit consisted of a bubble helmet and a one-piece swimsuit.

I think I've seen the same one... it sounds like it might be a Wally Wood design.  I'll dig into my art library and see if I find it.

I was unable to find the exact pinup that I had in mind from my library, but a quick Google search revealed a very similar artwork featuring adventure vixen Sally Forth by legendary cartoonist Wally Wood.

Sally Forth in space! Man, I'd love to see that.

At least now I understand why I like Jolly Jack's "Nurse Sally" so much - she's clearly following in the footsteps of Sally Forth! Smiley

It may exist, although I haven't seen it.  Wally Wood created an incredible volume of cartoon art during his lifetime, many of which were unused, re-used, cancelled, given away, and otherwise poorly documented... some fans are still trying to catalog all of his projects and publications.

I'm thinking that most of our readers are not going to understand this remark... Jolly Jack is the online handle for UK cartoonist Phillip M Jackson, but his "Nurse Sally" project appears only sporadically on Blambot.com, and does not appear to be archived anywhere else.  Sadly enough.  (The title character, a buxom blonde woman, appears in a variety of horror-movie spoofs (usually as the only survivor)).

I suggested that cartoonist Jason Waltrip try the same premise with the house style of the "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise.  Jason sent me the following illustration, with the comment, "...I don't think Snowy looks nearly as sexy with gigantic head, hands and feet..."

Good approximation of the Sonic style, though... looks like Bunny Rabbot might have a competitor.

Hi,

All I can say is 'nice hardware.'

Now she looks normal underneath its just Snowi happens to be wearing a pair of PowerFists and PowerBoots...  All she needs to do now is attach a Stormbolter  to the PowerGloves aka PowerFists and she is set to kill Zerg, Tyranids and Aliens, they are all the same type of creatures just different names and evolution stages aka mutations.

Plus we all look like Snowi when attaching that type of gear.

Continuing our exploration of the design options regarding a space suit configuration for the Sylvalagi (SnowBuni's animaloid species), cartoonist Jason Waltrip imagines what SnowBuni might look like in a Disney house style.  Cartoonist Waltrips says, "I tried for a Chip & Dale Rescue Ranger sort of look."
