Cartoonist Mike Sagara
Aug 14th, 2007 at 12:32pm

Topic has been rebooted from previous.

During the mid-80's and 90's, cartoonist Mike Sagara was one of the premiere small press and anthropomorphic artists.  In addition to producing his own self-published series, "Hey, Neeters!," he also did work for Mike and Carole Curtis's Shanda the Panda and Tank Vixens franchises.  His work is favorably compared to Stan Sakai (the artistic craftsman responsible for Usagi Yohimbo) for his use of simple, elegant linework and expressive minimalism.

Cartoonist Sagara has also provided significant artwork for a number of other SnowBuni projects and publications, including the lead story in the debut issue of SnowBuni's self-titled independent comic (SnowBuni) from MU Press, as well as other various other fanzine appearances and model sheet illustrations by Pseudo Comics.

Cartoonist Sagara is still active in a number of small projects today, having returned from a long sabbatical from cartooning.  We're happy to have him back.

Here's a quick SnowBuni concept sketch, performed in cartoonist Sagara's Hey, Neeters! quasi-chibi style.

Here's another sample in a more classical anime style, featuring SnowBuni with her "wild hare" bouffant.  Color performed by game designer Kyle Miller.

Regarding cartoonist Sagara's work published online in the Pseudo Comics Art Archive, Canadian fan cartoonist Jamie Malecki writes... "In one of those pinups by Mike, particularly the one where SnowBuni is helping with carpentry,...HER TAIL IS MISSING!"
Shocked

Reprinted from the Art Archive:

...

This is not Mike's fault... he wrote to me immediately after I had received this artwork in the mail, and noted that he had forgotten her tail.  I told him that I would take care of it... but then it sort of slipped my mind...

...perhaps we could make this into a SWF game... Pin the Tail on the BunnyGirl.
Roll Eyes

Note that the blonde ponigirl to the right is KrystalPoni, another underutilized character in the Sylvalagi pantheon.

Here's cartoonist Sagara's interpretation of everyone's favorite bad girl bunnygirl, HoniBuni, hefting her latest high-velocity toy.

Cartoonist Sagara is also one of the few people to have contributed pinups of SnowBuni's deceased elder sister, SnuggleBuni, who had been the "business bunny" of the trio.  Here she is, in her native environment...

This multi-panel pinup page featuring artwork by cartoonist Sagara was printed in the MechANImoids Special X, celebrating ten years of SnowBuni publications.

...

Note the inclusion of several of SnowBuni's lesser-known companions, such as Andiron (the raccoon to the left), Random (the four-armed Sylvalagi in the back), and Geralderson (the soda jerk, with uncharacteristic blonde hair).

Cartoonist Sagara makes a cameo appearance as the doctor in the last panel.

I'll be Shake and you be Bake!  Cheesy

"...that the nickname is awesome, because shake and bake rhyme and they're both verbs."

The color really made that drawing pop and I'm mostly pleased with the way it turned out. I think I did some sketches for model sheet #6 at the time too, which weren't very appealing at all Embarrassed . I'm glad Jeff has decided keep those filed away.

Hmmm.  I dug into your file of artwork last night, and I think I printed almost everything I've received from you (sometimes in multiple places, such as fanzines and website).  The only exception is the "dance" series... not sure why this was never printed, although I'm thinking that perhaps it was to have appeared in one of the publications that never quite made it to print (such as Hidden Treasures #3 or the Best of SnowBuni Blizzard #2).  There's certainly nothing wrong with the quality... how about I make some scans and post them here?

Well, we could have left them tucked away somewhere, but they're actually quite good.  As I recall, I provided some of the layouts for the poses, which were partially inspired by the amazing female gymnasts of the Olympic games.

...

Note that, at the time these were made, my model sheets depicted a more realistic set of proportions (hair, bosom, feet) then her current design.

I think we should ask cartoonist Sagara to colorize these for us.
