Hello,

I know her name is Misty, but even before the white radish productions I could have sworn that people would refer to her as Annie may which was a play on words.

But again I am probably wrong or is it that those guys were wrong.  I did not say anything because I had neve seen the video at the time but now I know what they were talking about.

Apparently there is an exhibit of anime artwork in New York City, featuring (among others) tons of cells and sketches from the Daicon IV animation films.

Are there any fans in the New York area who can check this out for us?

Here's the article from lainspotting:

From April 8th - July 24th, the Japan Society in New York City is running an exhibit called Little Boy: The Arts of Japan's Exploding Subculture, curated by Takashi Murakami. The art of Murakami and his collaborators is inspired by otaku culture and also serves to critically evaluate its role in contemporary (mainstream) Japanese culture. Their work is simultaneously entertaining, cute, and provocative, whether you are new to otaku culture or a seasoned veteran. In addition to contemporary Japanese art, a good deal of the exhibit focuses on the history of otaku culture and its most important icons. The Daicon IV Opening Animation is featured prominently in the gallery, running on a constant loop, accompanied by literally hundreds of original Daicon IV cels and sketches on display (covering a large wall)--a magnificent collection that you're not ever likely to see again. If you're a Daicon fan, and you can make it to New York City, you definitely have to check it out!

I plan to purchase a copy of the Gallery book

Wasn't Misty May the character from Otaku no Video? I've seen ads for a model kit of the character from the Daicon 4 opener named "Alice;" but I can't say for sure how accurate that is.

...apparently you are correct; Misty May is the name of the Otaku no Video mascot character.

As far as I know, the Daicon IV bunnygirl is nameless.

Hi,

I still think her name is 'Anime' pronounced: "AnnieMay."

I also guess her name was a play on words instead of her being nameless.  Or we could jusr refer to her as the Daicon Bunny Girl.

I do know that they made a model of her and it has a name but I do not recall what that name was and it was way too expensive for me at the time I saw it...

I guess I do more research.

Hi, this is a bit off topic:
Is there any way to get the videos in high quality, I have some RMs, but the quality is really bad Sad
Of course, I can get the LD but I don't have 1000 dollars, and I doubt I can get one these days.
I just watched the clip again (in low quality Tongue) and I think that the bunnygirl didn't dissappear, because at the giant explosion, it's not really "energy" (or whatever explosions are) but petals, like the ones from the cherry tree ( were the trees cherry???, dunno) but were petals, unless that bad quality tricked me Smiley.
Anyway, maybe at the end she appears with the petals blowing, because she finnished her job (just liek the daicon 3) and she dissappears until it's presence is needed again, (or until somebody makes a fanfic or movie).
That's simply what I think.
Thanks

Sadly, good quality copies are not available anywhere because of copyright issues.  Playboy and Gainax have not been able to develop an agreement which would allow sale of the Daicon IV opener in the United States.

I have seen laser-quality DVDs being offered for sale on eBay, but these (no doubt) are bootlegs.

...possibly.  But, in Japanese tradition, the falling of cherry blossoms signifies loss.  In fact, the rocket-powered "human bombs" developed at the end of WWII by the Japanese were named Ohka (cherry blossom) for their one-way mission of death.

Hello,

Actually the Laser Disc is no better then the tapes you have seen, I should know because I own the laser Disc of this, which has the two animations on it.  It also has a movie on it of a cute asain girl trapped inside a giant monster and the making of that movie on both sides of the disc...

It also has the making of the Daicon 4 video, all the pencil sketches and everything else.  Very nice new music as well.

More later, I am also trying to have a friend help me make a copy to DVD as well but with no luck.  I do not wish to lend my laser out because I have been having problems with people returning certain items.

...if anyone is interested, there is an original Daicon bunnygirl model available on eBay.  Here's the description:

Here is the impossibly rare model kit from General Products (later, Gainax), the Daicon IV mascot girl, Onna no Ko, unbuilt, complete and still in its original box. This is a 1/6 scale kit cast in hollow vinyl. NOT A RECAST or BOOTLEG, but the original, authentic and licensed Japanese item. When built and painted, it should stand about 11 inches tall. Kit contents have been double-checked for completeness; this must be assembled and painted. Also includes the parts assembly sheet and eye painting hints. The box has some wear and creases on the sides and some corners, as pictured. Some previous experience with vinyl kits is helpful but not essential. The winning bidder agrees to add $7.00 for priority mail shipping and insurance within the United States, payable by PayPal within 48 hours or by money order/cashier's check to be received within 7 business days. International bidders always welcome, inquire for shipping to your location. Be sure to check our other auctions for anime cels and more rare original garage/model kits; save considerably on combined shipping!

...as long as I've been aware of this character, I've never heard of her referred to as Onna no Ko (which I'm translating as Child's Woman, perhaps a reference to the little girl from the Daicon III opener who "grew up" to become the Daicon bunnygirl).

Photos from the auction:

...

Interesting to note that bunnygirls in the early '80s had very reasonable bustlines, such as the "A" cups pictured here.  The trend toward giant antigravity breasts didn't develop (no pun intended) until later.
Shocked

Actually the 'no' term is sometimes referred to as 'is' so in this case it might refer to Woman is a child or maybe even past tense which she was a child...

For example when Lum referred to Ataru as an idiot she would say: "ATARU NO BAKA!!!!!"  And then fry him to a nice black charred  state.

While trolling YouTube, I found this fan copy of the Daicon IV opening animation with a fan-remastered soundtrack.  Check it out quick; typically these copyrighted items are taken offline by the admins.

DAICON IV opening animation with remastered stereo audio

Now here's the funny story... I showed this video to my 2-year-old son, Tiger.  (He likes to sit on my lap and watch YouTube videos).

He LOVES it.

Now, every time I'm sitting at my computer, he comes running over, demanding to see the bunny video!  I think I've created a monster.
Shocked

It would be ironic if he started drawing bunny girls, too.  He'll probably be a lot more talented than his old man, though.
Wink

In a related note, does anyone know how to save a YouTube video using Mac Safari?

DAICON IV opening animation with remastered stereo audio

User Asterra has this to say about the restoration process:

    DAICON IV オープニングアニメ (リマスター音源)

Details on this project: I had planned for many years to try my hand at developing remastered renditions of the Daicon III and IV films. I knew that the easy part, if it could be called that, would be the audio, particularly in the case of Daicon IV. Daicon III represents a likely impossible challenge due to the fact that it utilizes many sound effects, the origins of which will probably never be known, never mind accessible. Most of the music cues in Daicon III are also proving somewhat difficult to secure in acceptable quality (non-LP, for a start).

Daicon IV uses no sound effects and only three tracks of music, from two albums. After securing a 160kbps MP3 of one, and lossless iterations of the others, I decided it was time to begin. The inexact nature of the utilization of the cues in the film posed unique challenges. For one thing, none of the tracks used in the film play at their proper speeds. For another, several subtle edits were made to each track, in order to force them to better fit the pacing of the visuals in Daicon IV, and these edits had to be identified and matched with precision. Some of the audio is even stereo reversed, or phase inverted. These anomalies were faithfully reproduced. Everything was done in 32 bit mode.

The result is pristine-sounding stereo audio whose timings are such a close match for the original that a person could almost use one to cancel out the other, barring some notable differences in timbre as dictated by the decidedly degraded nature of the film's version of the audio (particularly after undergoing film to LD to VHS to FLV transfers). Feel free to find other postings of this animation and listen for the hiss, hum, crackling and dropouts. Naturally, the video component of this project is the same as always: one of several VHS-sourced versions which can be found all over Youtube and other video resources. I used the one viewable on Nicovideo, as it was the best I could find. Any proper attempt to restore the films would need to start with an idealized digital transfer straight from the LD (or better), either in DV or lossless, which would clock in at about 2GB and 6GB, respectively. These are considerations for a pipe-dream future.

I should note that the complications involved in getting interleaved video and audio to properly sync were the biggest hurdle in this process, and 100% satisfactory results were never truly achieved. Furthermore, Youtube's bandwidth limitations (350 Kbps) literally forced me to recompress an already heavily compressed video, and the result is very nearly unwatchable. Once Youtube enables high quality videos, this video will be replaced with one that looks much better, and with better than 96Kbps audio. I will also make note of the curious fact that there seem to be two different versions of Daicon IV in circulation, with one playing the opening sequence (and music) slightly faster and with differences in phase and channel use. It's a safe guess that both versions are from original sources, meaning the official VHS or LD releases.

One method found by googling: Copy the youtube url and go to www.keepvid.com and paste the url. Click download and the .flv file will be downloaded to your computer. You'll need a flash video player to view the file.

Very detailed work for a video primarily aimed at con fans. Homages galore.

Wow.  Excellent recommend!  I've already used it to download a bunch of YouTube.com videos.

There are literally thousands of icons from both American and Japanese popular media.  As far as I know, no one has ever made a complete list.

BTW there is a video which compares the opening sequence from Densha Otoko with the original Daicon IV opening animation.  Both contain flying bunnygirls, as well as the Twilight soundtrack by ELO.
