Comments by Cartoonist Jeffrey H Wood:

  • Back in the mid-90s, professional comic book writer Mike Curtis and his wife Carole began work on Shanda the Panda, a slice-of-life comic which continues today under various independent publishers and artists. "Shanda," the star of the book, worked as a theater manager, which provided writer Curtis with a vehicle to explore his own experiences in that profession.
  • At one point, a project known as "Space Shanda" was considered, in which the cast of the original Shanda series were boosted into a science-fiction environment. Sadly, the project never got off the ground.
  • I thought the project raised humorous possibilities, including the scenario depicted in this pinup. I submitted this just-for-fun art to Mike and Carole in '95, and, if I recall correctly, it was printed in the Giant Shanda Annual 2nd Edition (by Shanda Fantasy Arts, 1997).
  • This artwork is not computer-generated... all of the grey shades were installed with hand-cut zipatones. Adhesive sheets are a lost art form.
