Comments by Cartoonist Jeffrey H Wood:
- In the 20+ years that I've been cartooning, I've seen a lot of publications come and go. One of the most ambitious projects of the mid-1990s was The American Journal of Anthropomorphics, by publisher Darrel Benvenuto.
- To the best of my knowledge, only 4 issues of this large trade paperwork were ever published, but they made up in quality what they lacked in quantity. Each issue had a slick, glossy, full color 70 lb. cover, with offset press b&w interiors. All of the featured artists represented the best of anthropomorphic (kemono) fandom at that time, including furry artists Terrie Smith, Michele Light, Eric Blumrich, Joshua Kennedy, Taral Wayne, Timothy Fay, Bill Fitts, and many more.
- Sadly, my work at the time was probably among the weakest of the contributions. I was going to school full-time at Washington State University (Go, Cougs!) when publisher Darrel was active, and many of my artworks in these books reflected the pressure and stress that I was feeling from my rigorous schedule. Not my best stuff. Nonetheless, I am pleased to have been a part of this effort.
- I've always been partial to this particular piece, which was designed to fit on the title page under my artist introduction. SnowBuni discovers that you should never date anything that possesses less than 10% of the human genome.
- The field of anthropomorphics has been redefined since the early 1990s, and now specifically excludes anime hybrid catgirls and bunnygirls (nekomimi) such as SnowBuni and the rest of the Sylvalagi gang as defined in her current continuity. So, my characters are unlikely to appear in similar publications, in the future.
- For those of you who own copies of the American Journal of Anthropomorphics which contain samples of my artwork, please DO NOT write to my address listed in the volume. My address in Idaho was a house my wife and I were renting while we going to school. We haven't lived there in about 10 years now, so any of your letters or packages delivered there will be lost and gone forever. ...but thanks for thinking of me anyway. = - )
