Prototype Sylvalagi artwork by cartoonist Jeffrey H Wood

Comments by Cartoonist Jeffrey H Wood:

  • I recently rediscovered this little bit o' artstuff in an old file, drawn with graytone felt markers which have since deteriorated into eye-popping shades of pink and purple. Fortunately, a grayscale scan returns the art to its original black & white format.
  • This piece was completed in 1984. Hopefully, the reader will see some improvement in my style and technique, in subsequent artwork.
  • As I recall, this particular scene shows one of my proto-Sylvalagi women (who were unnamed at this time) delivering bad news to her former boyfriend (Geralderson, the sometime protagonist in my Sylvalagi universe). No, she's not breathing hard vacuum; the story called for a high-tech spacesuit which enclosed an atmosphere in a personal force field. The system would allow brief trips outside the ship's hull.
  • Poor Geralderson looks like he's taking the news pretty hard.
  • Many of my early art drawing techniques do not reproduce well, as they often contain watercolor washes, and blended graytones with felt-tip markers.
