Art Introduction by Guest Artist Doug Gracey:

  • ...I bought a new sketch book for Nekocon 3 last year because I couldn't find my regular con sketch book...  Long story short, I had this new sketch book for a year & realized that I had not sketched in it (just passed it around to different con artists in the artist alley).  So, I had been kicking around an illo of the Buni cleaning & maintaining her weapons (I hardly see any illos on the subject, & took a crack at it - I think it came out cool looking).
  • As the con progressed & I had a moment (I was pretty busy this con with commissions & schmoozing with the other artists) I whipped up the illo.
  • Nekocon was pretty good this year, I was actually invited to the professional artists area of artist alley. Commissions kept me pretty busy because a lot of repeat business. I find it fascinating that most folk like to watch & talk to the artist drawing their commission piece (only some artists don't like that & find it to distracting). When I told this tale of art to a fellow artist at work he said he could not draw a request for somebody while they watched. I guess I'm just an art machine, I always enjoyed talking with the fellow portrait/character artists at malls or theme parks & share their outgoing attitude...
  • I also ran into another east coast Buni artist by the name of Mark Mandolia (aka Mr. Roboto). He walked up to my table Saturday night of the con (dressed as Mr. Roboto - silver & black face paint & all) saw my con sketchbook with Snowy in it & did a double take! We did the mutual intros, I gave him my card & all, nice guy - I hope we can keep in touch.
